Sports Neurology

Role of Neuroscience in Athletics/Sports:

The Chicago Neuroscience Institute (CNI) offers neurological consultation and care as part of the Institute Sports medicine approach. CNI is one the nation’s leading facilities in the field of Sports Neurology, a subspecialty within the broader field of Sports Medicine. The Institute represents one of the few comprehensive programs in the country dedicated to the neurological concerns and goals of athletes. CNI houses a World-Class Human Performance Lab which is used to assess and monitor neurological integrity and performance in athletes.  The CNI Sports Neurology Program prioritizes the following goals.

  • Improve the diagnosis and management of neurological injuries which may arise from participating in athletic activities/events. 
  • Foster an understanding of the neurological benefits of exercise and fitness, including the neurophysiology of peak performance in sports. 
  • Achieve elite athletic performance with the use of neurological measures and training methods
  • Define guidelines for the prevention, early detection and management of concussion, spinal cord and peripheral nerve injury in sport. 
  • Identify the role of neuropsychology and apply principles of neuropsychology to enhance athletic performance. 
  • Promote safe participation in sports and athletics.
  • Improve understanding of the neurological benefits of exercise and fitness
  • Help individuals attain a higher state of neurophysiological readiness and peak performance in sport.


Significant contributions to the field of Sports Neurology at CNI are being led by Dr. David, H. Durrant, the Director of CNI. Dr. Durrant is a Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist and author of a benchmark textbook in neurology. Dr Durrant is also the President of the American Academy of Spine Physicians (AASP), one of the largest multidisplinary spine organizations in the world. CNI has and will continue to provide services to o elite, professional and Olympic athletes.
