Most patients who are seen in the PM&R division will be given nutritional guidelines to support their general health. Specific supplemental recommendations may be provided to help facilitate anabolic recovery of compromised tissues. Special attention will be placed on recommending neuroprotective strategies in those cases where there is neurological compromise or disease.
Sport and performance psychology refers to a personalized approach to care which addresses the role of human behavior in all settings including sports, exercise and activities of daily living. The CNI staff focuses on identifying and applying psychology principles and techniques which facilitate peak cognitive and physical performance. The approach often involves the use of specialized services of the CNI Human Performance Lab. The approach may also involve the use of biofeedback.
The CNI division of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) is equipped and staffed to provide care including a traditional and neurorehabilitative approach. Therapeutic emphasis is placed upon reducing pain, improving joint range of motion, increasing muscular strength and improving coordination. The objectives of PM&R Division of services include empowering the patient to become self-sufficient and employable at their highest attainable potential. Patients may be referred to the Division of PM&R for the development of custom orthotics and orthopedic braces.
The section of neurorehabilitation was developed to provide special attention to the care of patients with neurological impairment and to promote high-level neuromuscular performance. Patients recovering from negative habitual patterning, brain, spinal or peripheral neurological insult may require neurorehabilitation to improve muscle performance, balance, coordination and biomechanical efficiency. Goals of neurorehabilitation include the enhancement of human performance and life enrichment while maximizing independence. The CNI Division of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation encompasses many different services which are listed below
The Chicago Neuroscience Institute (CNI) offers neurological consultation and care as part of the Institute Sports medicine approach. CNI is one the nation’s leading facilities in the field of Sports Neurology, a subspecialty within the broader field of Sports Medicine. The Institute represents one of the few comprehensive programs in the country dedicated to the neurological concerns and goals of athletes. CNI houses a World-Class Human Performance Lab which is used to assess and monitor neurological integrity and performance in athletes. The CNI Sports Neurology Program prioritizes the following goals.
Pain management is a healthcare approach developed to treat and manage all types of pain, including musculoskeletal, spinal and neuropathic pain disorders. Success requires an accurate diagnosis and early intervention. CNI offers onsite pain management approaches, as well as, as self-care and ambulatory (take home) solutions. CNI prioritizes conservative (non-invasive) pain managing. The primary goal is to reduce or eliminate pain, improve physical performance, and to enhance the quality of an individual’s life.
Only a limited number of patients will be accepted for treatment at CNI. Those that are accepted will be referred to the appropriate treatment division for therapeutic intervention. Typically, only those patients who require our individualized approach and those who have neurological compromise contributing to their condition will be accepted into the program. Not all patients who are seen at CNI are accepted for care. Many patients are referred soley for diagnostic assessment and are subsequently recommended to return to thier referring physician to discuss therapeutic options.
The Chicago Neuroscience Institute offers the following services:
The Chicago Neuroscience Institute (CNI) offers bracing and support solutions to meet your personal needs. We strive to improve your physical performance by improving stability and enhancing mobility where necessary. Sometimes this requires specialized supportive products. Our goal is to enhance your human potential and help you perform better.
The Institute offers upper and lower extremity orthoses. The Institute also offers specialized spinal braces and supports. The spine products are designed and used to address different goals. This includes realigning the spine, immobilizing the spine and/or supporting weakened or painful regions of the spine. The use of orthotics and bracing is often performed during the course of a rehabilitative approach. In some cases patients are referred to an indepdent (outside) specialist for atypical or highly customized orthotics and/or bracing.
CNI houses a leading-edge gait lab. Advanced expertise and technology is available to help assess gait and the distribution of pressure and forces across the foot during walking. This information can be used to help develop custom foot inserts (orthotics) to improve biomechanical efficiency, reduce pain and to enhance physical performance. The Institute works with a variety of orthotic companies to help meet the personalized needs of each patient.
